The Alpine Club's artefact collection spans the history of the club and mountaineering.
The largest part of it is the ice axe collection which includes ice axes belonging to promient members such as Whymper and Tom Boudillion. The collection also features some rare examples of early ice axes. The most famous axe in the collection, however, is the one retrieved from Everest in the 1930s that was carried by Andrew Irvine on the 1924 Everest expedition.
The collection also features a range of gear, rope, boots and clothing. This includes items from the 1930's Everest expeditions and oxygen cylinders from the first Ascents of Everest and Kanchenjunga.
Items from the collection have been loaned to support exhibitions at Rheged, Merton College and Shrewsbury School.
The current Keeper of Artefacts is Nigel Buckley.
